The Angeleno
What if a magazine like The New Yorker existed for a West Coast readership, but was still written by a New York-oriented staff? The result is this satire, which takes aim at the literary, cultural, and artistic stereotypes that exist between the two coasts. The Eastern Seaboard tends to enjoy a monopoly on “high-end” literature, journalism, and publishing. As a result, these East Coasters believe they could write about L.A. better than anyone who actually lives there. To what degree that opinion is accurately portrayed here—where irony ends and the truth begins—is up for interpretation, and likely depends on which coast you were born screaming toward. The Angeleno was accepted into the 2023 UCLA DMA Undergraduate showcase at the New Wight Gallery, where it won a “Best in Show.”
I wrote, illustrated, and photographed every portion of the magazine. I designed it by mimicking the layout of the New Yorker in order to create the satire.
